John first joined the Vincennes Township Fire Department in 1991, where he received most of his Fire Service Training, including taking the first nationally recognized Hazardous Materials Technician Level course from Oklahoma State University.  He then received his HazMat Tank Car Specialist training in Pueblo, Colorado.  While receiving many master level fire service courses, he became a NFPA Instructor III and completed the National Fire Academy Chemistry of Hazardous Materials Course in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  John went on to become a state licensed Basic Emergency Medical Technician and then Advanced Emergency Medical Technician for Halter-Smith Ambulance Service and is still an active EMT.  John joined the Knox County Sheriff’s Department as a reserve deputy and became one of their first SWAT Medics.  After 9-11, The Indiana Department of Homeland Security formed the State’s 10 Homeland Security Districts and John became one of the Task Force Leaders and became a FEMA Type III Incident Commander for theIndiana District 10 Response Team.  He then became a FEMA National Incident Management System Instructor and currently teaches throughout Southern Indiana.  John has spent the last 33 years in all branches of our County Public Safety disciplines and is currently appointed on the Local Emergency Planning Committee, the County Emergency Medical Services and Knox County Central Dispatch Oversight Committees. In 2023 he was appointed to the Emergency Management Alliance of Indiana Board of Directors and is the 2024 and 2025 EMAI Conference Chair.
